Half Marathon Filling Fast

Over 1,000 registered for 5th annual race

2011DCHM-2955.jpgThe 5th annual Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5k is filling faster than ever. More than 1,000 runners have already registered for the May 5 race, 47 percent more than at the same point in 2011.

More than 300 people signed up for the race in the last week of January, pushing the capped event past the halfway full mark. The half marathon, run entirely on the closed, paved roads of Peninsula State Park, is limited to 1,800 runners. If registrations continue at their current pace the race will fill by March 1.

“We’re thrilled by the excitement this race has generated in five short years,” said co-founder Dave Eliot. “Our growth is a credit to our staff, our volunteers, and our community for welcoming and serving our participants with such open arms.”

The Nicolet Bay 5k, which takes place the same morning in the park, is quickly approaching capacity as well. Almost 300 people have registered for the sister event, which is capped at 500 runners. Both events filled to capacity in 2011.

At right:  Dominick Meyer pulled away early to win the 2011 Door County Half Marathon. The first three runnings were won by Jason Ryf of Oshkosh.
